Should I buy a cheap pipe, or an expensive one? For example, after some initial research, I chose to buy a mid-priced briar estate pipe as my first. For me, that too was easy. My first pipe must come from England. Is it because of Sherlock Holmes? Or just the stereotypical image of a tweed-jacketed old Englishman reading and smoking a pipe in his cozy study? And so I bought one. This one, to be exact.

Quality Meerschaum pipe with straight stem in classic case. That is a great question. Why select a Meerschaum pipe over that made of briar, corncob or other material? Check out this list of reasons why: Meerschaum is a light-weight stone; this gives you a very light pipe to hold in your mouth or in your hand.

The weight difference is noticable when compared to similar sized briar pipes. Meerschaum is a porous material; this feature will give you a much cleaner smoke since tars and other undesireable by-products of burning tobacco leaves are absorbed by the stone. Meerschaum colors as it is used; as the tars and other byproducts are absorbed by the stone, they are drawn to the surface by the beeswax coating which colors the stone over time.

The landscape plan was dreamed up by homeowner Peter Fenlon, a game designer and publisher of the internationally famed Settlers of Catan series, whose studio is ensconced in a sprawling two-story structure behind the garden. Stephen Barling Acquiring the house in after it had been gutted by flippers, Fenlon and his wife, Olivia, gradually made it their own, eventually doubling its size.

The most complex upgrade thus far has been the landscaping, and in the Fenlons partnered with landscape architect Zoe Edgecomb and Lithic Construction project manager Brian Bristow to lay out their plans. Consistent with that vision, all of the rock is regionally sourced, a mix of limestone, quartz and granite. The fire pit comprises three pieces of granite from Red Hill quarry, fitted together like a puzzle and then hand-carved to form a center bowl.

Very Full Pleasant to Tolerable Grouse-Moor is a very often maligned tobacco and this is simply not fair. It is a carefully produced blend of the finest ingredients and a consistent blending tradition going back over two hundred years. I would proffer that the reason so many would thumb their noses at it is because it is the sort of blend that we serious pipemen are told to shy away from because it is not laden with manly amounts of Latakia or smoky stoved Virginia. For my part, Grouse-Moor is one of my favorite tobaccos, representing, as it does, the pinnacle of one of the most venerable traditions in the realm of tobacco, that of the English Lakeland.

Only the finest steamed and stoved bright Virginia is employed, cut into deliciously long ribbons that pack easily and are perfect for slow, relaxed puffing. It is the top casing that truly defines Grouse-Moor, and the sauce used is the very best blend of essences of any that are employed for Lakeland-style aromatics, managing to be floral and herbal and fruity in delicate balance all at the same time.

The essence used by Samuel Gawith is a secret blend of all natural components known only to one employee of that historic blending house. I can recall the time that I visited the factory in Kendal and the reverence with which the bottle of Grouse-Moor essence was brought out to be sprinkled onto a batch of leaf to fulfill my request for a pound of Grouse-Moor direct from the factory floor.

Oddly, to me, at least, it is the extra flavoring that people seem to dislike in this blend. The few people that like Grouse-Moor here have attempted to justify it by saying that it has been around for so long that it must be good. I believe there is more to it than that. The floral essence of a Lakeland aromatic is, in my opinion, one of the greatest innovations in the realm of pipe smoking. The specific flavor notes of Lakeland aromatic essences serve to heighten and exemplify the nuances of a fine Virginia and even cut out some of the excessive sootiness to be found in many examples of the leaf, as opposed to German and American style aromatics which only cover up the true tobacco flavor.

Now at age 15 one didn’t immediately begin to fashion pipes at Dunhill’s. There was a long apprenticeship which involved much sweeping up of pieces of briar and vulcanite, and being “tea boy” to the pipe makers. But Bill showed keen interest in learning the craft. Even before he was permitted to attempt to make pipes at the factory he would bring home rejected bowls and mouthpieces in order to experiment.

Several of the “masters of the bench” noticed Bill’s interest, but these were very serious craftsmen, and each had developed processes over the years which they were loathe to share with each other, let alone the newcomer. Finally Harry Saigrott, having recognized Bill’s exceptional raw talent, began to share his expertise which was in the art of making the mouthpiece and mating it to the bowl.
